Dr. Humphrey is a Fellow of the Microscopy Society of America, and a Past President Microscopical Society of Canada.  Her passion for science outreach can be found in the work that she shares to bring the incredible imaging that can be seen with electron microscopes to schools, community groups, and the general public.

Dr. Humphrey also hosts a regular feature on CBC’s “North by Northwest” radio show, where her “Up Close Puzzles” have been challenging and delighting listeners for over a year!
We are excited to turn Nanaimo Science’s studio into a full microscopy lab, where families will be able to try out digital microscopes, compound microscopes, and observe specimens handled by Dr. Humphrey with a tabletop scanning electron microscope!  Magnification will let us see items that are on the micrometer scale (µm or 1 thousandth of a millimeter!)

We are grateful for the generous sponsorship from VMAC which has made it possible for us to invite Dr. Humphrey to Science Sunday.
We are extremely pleased to introduce another key presenter, Mr. Pat Trask from the Courtenay and District Museum & Paleontology Centre!
Mr. Trask is a Museum Curator of Natural History at the Courtenay and District Museum & Paleontology Centre where he has worked for over 30 years.  He is best known for his work promoting the Elasmosaurus, an 80 million year old long-necked plesiosaur.  A complete Elasmosaur skeleton was found in the late-1980’s by his brother Mike (and his then 12-year old daughter Heather) in the Comox Valley; Mr. Trask continued his work with this large marine reptile and has discovered another in 2020!  These findings were remarkable as the Elasmosaur had not previously been found west of the Canadian Rockies.  Recently, the Elasmosaur was adopted as the provincial fossil of British Columbia!
Mr. Trask continues to take part in paleontological work, planning new digs, and sharing this field experience with students, families and other visitors at the Courtenay and District Museum.
We are excited to have Mr. Trask deliver presentations at our Science Sunday Expo and share examples from his long career as an amateur paleontologist.

We are grateful for the generous sponsorship from Coastal Community Credit Union which has made it possible for us to invite Mr. Trask to Science Sunday.
